About Miriam Chor Freitas, LCSW Trauma Therapy in San Diego & Online

Welcome — I’m realy glad you’re here.

I’m Miriam Chor Freitas, a holistic trauma therapist and EMDRIA-approved EMDR Consultant-in-Training.

I help people process their pain, heal, and thrive.

I offer individual therapy, psychoeducational support groups, and clinical consultation—both in person in San Diego and online across California, the U.S., and internationally.

A Multicultural and Integrative Approach to Healing

Originally from Brazil, I came to the United States at 19 in search of healing from my own childhood trauma. That experience has deeply shaped who I am, both as a person and as a therapist.

I know what it’s like to feel unsafe at home and to struggle to understand how the people who are supposed to love you the most can also be the ones who hurt you the most. I know what it’s like to carry pain that doesn’t always have words — to hold it quietly while continuing to function on the outside, even being praised for your accomplishments.

In my case, I didn’t just function — I overfunctioned. I became a high achiever, appearing capable, social, and well-adjusted, while carrying much more internally. This is something I recognize in many of the people I work with — we do what we have to do to survive.

I also know that healing doesn’t happen all at once. It unfolds over time — with the right support, safety, and space.

That understanding is what first led me to work in Child Welfare Services, supporting children and families through profound hardship, including intergenerational trauma, abuse, neglect, and systemic failures in care. Early in my career, it was important for me to be part of work that protected and supported others in ways I didn’t always experience growing up.

Over time, my path evolved into private practice, where I now bring nearly two decades of experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression, and complex life circumstances. My work is grounded not only in professional training, but in a deep respect for how the nervous system holds experience — and how healing happens through both the mind and the body.

I speak English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and military communities, as well as those impacted by stigma, discrimination, and systemic distress.

In both my personal life and professional work, I’ve found that healing is not only about processing the past, but also about creating a life that feels more grounded, connected, and meaningful. Practices like therapy, mindfulness, movement, and intentional self-care have been an important part of my own journey, and I thoughtfully integrate these elements into my work with clients.

Outside of my work, I enjoy hiking, going to the beach, cooking, traveling, practicing mindfulness, making jewelry, and spending time with my friends and family.

How I Work — A Holistic, Collaborative, Embodied Process

I take a relational, trauma-informed, and body-aware approach that integrates evidence-based therapies with a deep respect for the nervous system and the body’s natural capacity to heal.

Our work moves at your pace. Together, we create a space where you can feel safe, supported, and more connected to yourself — allowing us to gently explore deeper layers of trauma, attachment wounds, and life experiences.

I integrate approaches such as EMDR, somatic therapy, attachment and relational work, parts work, and polyvagal-informed practices, alongside mindfulness and body-based techniques. This allows for a process that is both grounded and deeply transformative.
